A Getaway For Every Season

Club Med expands operations to Canada

Facing the gentle waters of the St. Lawrence River while perched against the steep slopes of Le Massif de Charlevoix is Club Med Québec Charlevoix, a resort that has helped redefine all-inclusive mountain travel in Canada.

“This location combines Club Med’s signature all-inclusive mountain vacation experience,” said Nicolas Cutter, chef de village (general manager) of Club Med Québec Charlevoix, “with one of North America’s most spectacular and stunning landscapes. Guests have year-round access to the region’s natural beauty and outdoor experiences.”

As the corporate entity’s first Club Med resort in Canada, the resort drew on the local culture and the region’s four distinct seasons to guide the design and construction of the facility. Stone, wood and cladding reflect traditional Québec architecture, while expansive windows and the building’s orientation maximize views of the St. Lawrence River.

“The result is a resort that blends into the surrounding landscape rather than competing with it,” said Cutter. “We’re located in the heart of the Charlevoix region, with trails and glades spanning 400 acres of Le Massif.”

According to Club Med, the resort was designed to provide direct access to those experiences. “The resort offers direct ski-in/ski-out access to Le Massif de Charlevoix, one of Eastern Canada’s premier ski destinations,” said Cutter. “Guests get to enjoy an all-inclusive stay that eliminates much of the planning typically associated with mountain vacations.”

Rather than requiring guests to coordinate accommodations, lift tickets, equipment rentals and lessons separately, the all-inclusive format packages those elements together, with perks such as sports and wellness, childcare, and gourmet food and premium drinks included.

“Le Massif has the highest vertical drop east of the Rockies, so winter at Club Med revolves around creating an incredible, hassle-free experience for snow sport enthusiasts,” Cutter said.

The emphasis on programming has become a defining feature of the resort. While skiing remains the primary attraction during the winter season, guests also have access to a variety of recreational and wellness experiences that encourage spending time together out of the slopes.

“Unlike a traditional ski vacation, we offer packages that involve après-ski experiences, children’s programming, daily entertainment, and dining options in addition to accommodations and typical resort amenities,” said Cutter.

He says this includes a Nordic-inspired spa featuring hot tubs, sauna and steam room alongside a heated indoor pool and activities, such as fitness and yoga classes, guided winter hikes, snowshoeing and luge sledding. Meanwhile, children of all ages have access to dedicated programming spaces, including circus classes.

For a resort with an identity rooted in its surrounding landscape, environmental stewardship extends beyond meeting certification standards.

“The resort celebrates Québec’s culture through locally inspired cuisine, regional design and authentic destination experiences,” Cutter said. “Our restaurants showcase Charlevoix dining at its finest, incorporating regional ingredients to Québec-inspired dishes alongside international cuisine.”

He says the resort also offers an Exclusive Collection space featuring premium accommodations, a private concierge service, a ski room and a lounge, with outdoor hot tubs overlooking the St. Lawrence River. “Club Med is as much a cultural getaway as it is an outdoor adventure.”

Rather than focusing exclusively on skiing, many guests now expect opportunities to learn about local food, culture and landscapes during their stay. Cutter says this shift is one of the company’s greatest successes. “Club Med is Canada’s first four-season mountain resort,” he said. “Since opening in 2021, Club Med has focused on developing compelling experiences year round and continuously evolving into a destination that transcends winter,” he said.

With demand for mountain vacations extending throughout the calendar year, it has prompted Club Med to invest in programming that encourages guests to visit the resort at any time, no matter the season. “There are a whole range of staff who make maintaining a year-round resort possible,” said Cutter. “Not to mention, an all-inclusive experience, where every department can influence guest satisfaction.”

Operating throughout the year presents its own challenges. Facilities must transition between seasons, recreational programming changes significantly, and maintenance schedules shift to accommodate changing weather conditions and guest expectations. Yet those transitions are largely invisible to visitors, thanks to coordinated planning across multiple departments.

“We have 200 great employees, who comprise of housekeeping, waitstaff, chefs and maintenance, and 130 gentile organizers who work at the front desk, concierge, entertainment, kids club and the resort’s other programming,” Cutter said.

Ensuring guests are taken care of from Day 1 requires a careful balance of safety training, guest service and operational efficiency. Cutter says that collaboration allows every department to contribute to the overall guest experience, regardless of whether employees work behind the scenes or interact directly with visitors.

“Most recently, Club Med’s Summer Reimagined program has positioned the resort around something deeper than the expected seasonal activities,” said Cutter. “And a chance to expand on what Club Med could offer guests in regards to summer experiences.”

According to Club Med, Summer Reimagined is built around a series of guided outdoor activities, wellness sessions, creative workshops and expert-led experiences that encourage guests to reconnect with nature.

“The Summer Reimagined program encourages guests to disconnect from busy routines,” said Cutter. “It aims to reconnect humans with nature and loved ones, and rediscover the simple joys and nostalgia of summer.” He says the growing demand for experiential and meaningful vacations has allowed Club Med to broaden its offerings well beyond traditional outdoor recreation. “It also aligns with the company’s global Happy to Care program and our day-to-day operations,” he said.

With travelers increasingly seeking deeper connections to the places they visit, Happy to Care is the company’s global commitment to responsible tourism, focusing on operating greener resorts and more sustainable travel experiences that lend to positive impacts on the surrounding communities.

“Sustainability has been central to Club Med Québec Charlevoix since its development,” said Cutter. “At the resort level, Club Med has received the Green Globes Building Certification for environmentally responsible construction.”

The resort has also earned certification through the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method, an internationally recognized system that evaluates the sustainability performance of buildings and infrastructure. “The natural setting is one of the property’s defining features,” he said, “making the long-term health of the Charlevoix region an important consideration for operations and guest experiences.”

For a resort with an identity rooted in its surrounding landscape, environmental stewardship extends beyond meeting certification standards.

“Protecting the natural environment is essential to the guest experience,” said Cutter. “We’re surrounded by the mountains of Charlevoix and the St. Lawrence River. So, preserving these landscapes helps ensure they can be enjoyed for generations to come.”

He says the resort sources more than 65 percent of its fresh ingredients locally through short supply chains with regional producers and partners, allowing guests to experience regional ingredients while helping strengthen the local agricultural economy.

“We compost and work with Solucycle in Québec City to divert food waste and transform it into renewable energy, including biogas,” he said, “in addition to donating surplus food through La Tablée des Chefs, an organization that helps reduce food waste and support local communities.”

Other resort initiatives include on-site beekeeping and biodiversity conservation through the Charlevoix Biosphere Region’s Biodiversity Engagement Fund, along with welcoming local school groups annually and supporting community events in Petite-Rivière-Saint-François.

“For Club Med, these initiatives reflect an effort to integrate the resort into the surrounding community rather than operate independently of it,” said Cutter. “By investing in local producers, celebrating Québec culture and showcasing regional traditions, Club Med helps ensure tourism benefits visitors and the surrounding community. It creates a richer, more authentic guest experience while strengthening the destination itself.”

This philosophy aligns with a broader commitment to ensuring tourism generates benefits beyond the resort itself. “Together, these initiatives reflect the resort’s commitment to creating lasting impacts on the people and nature of the Charlevoix region,” he said. “It helps the resort minimize its environmental footprint while creating a more sustainable travel experience for guests.”

As the Charlevoix resort has matured, the property has become an important part of the company’s North American mountain portfolio, reinforcing Club Med’s continued investment in Canadian destinations. “Club Med is expanding its Québec portfolio,” said Cutter. “Located southwest of Charlevoix, Club Med Tremblant will open in 2028, helping the brand increase its presence even further in the area.”

Looking ahead, Cutter says Club Med Québec Charlevoix will continue operating its outdoor adventure, wellness, family activities, regional cuisine and seasonal programming, and maintain its signature all-inclusive ski experience during the winter months.

“Similar packages are offered during other seasons,” he said. “Like our winter packages, our summer packages offer spectacular views on the river with gourmet dining, expert childcare, unlimited opportunities for recreation and wellness.”

With Club Med’s emphasis on year-round programming, sustainability initiatives and community partnerships, the resort is primed to respond to those changing expectations while safeguarding one of Québec’s most distinct landscapes. “Club Med Québec Charlevoix is stunning,” said Cutter. “And we will continue strengthening its position as a premier four-season destination.”
